Does my video ever leave my browser?

On the default path, no. We strip audio from the video right inside your browser, so the file never leaves your device. The only network traffic is an anonymous analytics ping and the daily quota counter. The server option is opt-in; only that path uploads anything.

When do I need the server option?

When your browser is too old to run our in-browser engine, when the file is bigger than your device cap (1 GB on desktop, 300 MB on mobile), or when your browser runs out of memory partway through. If you want to mute video online without uploading and your browser supports it, the default path handles it; otherwise, you can opt into the server.

Is the output the same quality as the input?

Yes. The video itself is unchanged. We do not compress it again, so the picture you uploaded is the picture you download. The only thing that changes is the audio: every audio track is dropped, which is what makes this a true lossless mute video tool.

What about subtitles, chapters, and other extras?

Subtitle tracks are kept. Chapters are kept. Cover-art tracks (the still image some MP4 files carry as a second video track, common on iTunes-style files) are dropped, leaving the main picture alone. This works on mute MP4, mute MOV, and mute WebM files alike.

How long do you keep the file if I use the server option?

The video is auto-deleted from our storage after 24 hours. The job record is anonymised after 30 days, so even the small bit of bookkeeping we keep does not point back at you. The download link itself expires after 15 minutes.

Can I remove sound from video free, in batch?

One video at a time on this tool, free. A paid batch path is on the roadmap; the same privacy posture will apply when it ships. There is no signup required to use the free tool today.

When your browser cannot do the work (older browsers, very large files, or an out-of-memory case partway through), you can opt into the server. The server uploads the file, runs the same kind of cleanup with our server-side tool, and deletes the file after 24 hours. We strip ALL metadata from your video on this path; we say so out loud because a server-path output has a different privacy profile than a browser-path output.

Subtitle tracks, chapters, and the main picture are kept on every path. Cover-art tracks (the second still-image video track some MP4 files carry) are dropped. Before you can download anything, the tool double-checks the output has zero audio tracks and one video track.
