Översikt
Convert HEIC to AVIF. iPhone and iPad cameras save photos as High Efficiency Image Container by default, and HEIC is not a web format: most browsers refuse to display it, most CMS importers reject it, and Windows users see a "file type not supported" error. This tool re-encodes your HEIC as a AV1 Image File Format that plays everywhere, with no resizing and nothing kept on our side.
AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a delivery-friendly target standardised in 2018 and supported in roughly 95%% of 2026 browsers. It is the right landing spot when the use case is publishing on the web, sending over email, or handing the file to a non-Apple collaborator. At visual parity with the source HEIC, the output is about 100% of the byte cost, which is the right balance of quality and compatibility.
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the Apple-platform camera default. It uses HEVC intra-frame coding to pack high-quality photos into small files, preserves wide-gamut colour, and supports HDR. All of that is great for the iCloud round-trip and for on-device viewing, but terrible for web delivery: browser support for HEIC itself stalled at about 20% globally and has not moved in years.
The trade-off is metadata fidelity. HEIC often carries a Display P3 colour profile and HDR metadata; converting to AVIF may collapse those to sRGB depending on the target format chosen. For Instagram, web hero images, and blog covers that is the right call. For a gallery site that deliberately ships wide gamut, convert to AVIF instead, which preserves Display P3 and HDR natively.
When NOT to convert HEIC to AVIF: when the destination is an Apple-platform viewer (keep the HEIC; iOS Photos, macOS Preview, and Apple Mail open it natively and save space). When you are archiving camera originals (keep the HEIC as the master). When the wide-gamut or HDR metadata matters and the target format cannot preserve it: pick a modern codec such as AVIF instead.
Your HEIC upload is held only while we transcode it. The resulting AVIF comes back on a one-time download link and is deleted the moment you fetch it. Camera EXIF (including GPS coordinates, if present) is preserved by default: run the EXIF strip tool before publishing a camera HEIC publicly, because iPhone photos embed your location in the image itself.

Where HEIC comes from
iPhone and iPad cameras save photos as HEIC by default since iOS 11. Apple-platform viewers open it natively; almost nothing else does.
Browser support cliff
Browser support for HEIC itself sits at roughly 20% globally and has not moved in years. AVIF reaches about 95%%.
Size at visual parity
At the default quality, AVIF lands at roughly 100% of HEIC byte cost on typical smartphone photography.
GPS metadata warning
iPhone photos embed GPS coordinates in EXIF. The conversion preserves that metadata into the AVIF; strip it before publishing publicly.
Colour fidelity
HEIC often carries Display P3 and HDR metadata. The AVIF output preserves those profiles only if the target format supports them.
When to keep HEIC
Keep the HEIC when the destination is another Apple device or the iCloud library: it is smaller and opens natively.
Year standardised
HEIC was standardised in 2015 and AVIF in 2018. The gap drives both the quality and the compatibility difference.
Så fungerar det
Tre steg, vanligtvis klart inom fem sekunder.
- 1
Upload an iPhone HEIC
Drop a HEIC up to 25 MB, or paste from the Mac clipboard. AirDrop the file to your computer first if iOS refuses to expose the raw file.
- 2
We transcode it to AVIF
We decode the HEVC payload inside your HEIC and re-encode it as AVIF at a default quality that matches the source visually. Camera EXIF is preserved by default.
- 3
Download your AVIF
Your AVIF comes back on a one-time download link that plays on Windows, Linux, the open web, and every email client. The original HEIC is deleted the moment you fetch.
