# Convert PNG to AVIF online

Drop a PNG or JPEG and get an AVIF of the same pixels back, at roughly half the byte cost. One image per request, no sign-up, nothing saved.

## AVIF at a glance

- **Compression vs PNG and JPEG:** On photographic content AVIF reaches PNG-equivalent visual quality at roughly 50% of the bytes and JPEG-equivalent quality at roughly 33% of the bytes.
- **Browser support:** Chromium 85+, Firefox 113+, Safari 16+ (macOS Ventura, iOS 16+), and Edge 85+. Global support crossed the 95% baseline in 2024.
- **Codec base:** AVIF is built on AV1, the same intra-frame codec that powers AV1 video; it inherits AV1's perceptual coding tools and HDR support.
- **Colour space support:** AVIF natively encodes Display P3 wide-gamut and Rec. 2100 HDR (PQ + HLG), which JPEG and WebP cannot do.
- **Alpha channel:** AVIF supports an 8-bit or 10-bit alpha channel, so PNGs with transparency convert without losing the alpha.
- **Encoding cost:** AVIF encoding is roughly 5-10x slower than JPEG, which is why we run the encoder on our side instead of in your browser.
- **When NOT to use AVIF:** Archival masters (use PNG), icons under 50 by 50 pixels (the format itself adds more than it saves), and assets shipped only to legacy systems (use a high-quality JPEG instead).

## FAQ

### Why convert PNG to AVIF?

AVIF reaches similar quality at roughly half the file size of PNG, so pages load noticeably faster. It is supported in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge as of the 2024 baseline, so a single AVIF asset reaches over 95% of global traffic without a fallback.

### Does this resize my image?

No. Conversion is pixel-for-pixel. If you want to resize too, run the Compress tool after converting, or use the Pad tool to extend the canvas without losing pixels.

### What happens to my upload?

Your upload is only held while we process it (usually a few seconds) and is deleted the moment we send the result back. Nothing is saved, indexed, or used for model training.

### Can I batch convert?

The free tier is one image per request. The paid Optimizer tier batches up to 50 images per job and ships a ZIP of AVIFs with consistent quality settings across the whole batch.

### When should I NOT use AVIF?

Three cases. First, when you need pixel-perfect lossless output for archival (use PNG instead). Second, when the consumer is an older Safari (pre 16.0), an old Android WebView, or a desktop email client (these still need a JPEG or WebP fallback). Third, for very small icons under 50x50 pixels where the AVIF container overhead can outweigh the encoded payload.

### How does AVIF compare to WebP and JPEG?

On photographs AVIF beats WebP by roughly 20% and beats JPEG by 50% at the same visual quality. On flat illustrations the AVIF win can stretch to 60-70% over PNG. The trade-off is conversion speed: AVIF takes longer to produce than JPEG (roughly 5 to 10 times longer), which is why we run it on our side instead of in your browser.

## Glossary

### AVIF (AVIF)

AV1 Image File Format, a still-image codec derived from AV1 video. Reaches PNG-equivalent quality at roughly half the bytes; standardised by the Alliance for Open Media in 2018.

### AV1 (AV1)

A royalty-free video codec ratified by the Alliance for Open Media in 2018. AVIF uses AV1's intra-frame coding tools to compress single still images.

### Lossy compression

A compression technique that discards information the human eye is unlikely to notice. AVIF's default mode is lossy at a quality level that targets visual parity with the source.

### Lossless compression

A compression technique that preserves every original pixel. AVIF supports a lossless mode (used in this tool when you flip the lossless toggle); PNG is lossless by default.

### Chroma subsampling (4:2:0)

A perceptual coding optimisation that stores colour information at lower resolution than brightness. AVIF defaults to 4:2:0 chroma for photographic content; flat illustrations and screenshots benefit from 4:4:4.

### Alpha channel

A per-pixel transparency value. AVIF preserves 8-bit or 10-bit alpha, so PNGs with transparent backgrounds convert cleanly.

### Core Web Vitals (CWV)

Google's page-experience signals: Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint, and Cumulative Layout Shift. Switching hero images from PNG/JPEG to AVIF typically improves LCP by 200-800 ms on slow networks.
